What is the best season? It’s a highly debated question, and I believe that there’s one superior answer. It’s not hot summer, dull winter, or rainy spring. It’s fall, when there’s cooler weather and uniquely colorful trees.
The weather in fall is often as perfect as it can be. I find that 65 degrees is the golden mean– not too warm, not too cold, just right, and the weather is often within that range in October. Yes, there are days of undesirable hot weather in the eighties; this year, it has been uncomfortably hot thus far. However, fall weather is generally the best, and it is finally starting to cool down now.
In fall, there are beautiful views that you can actually enjoy without the sun blaring. Trees and plants are bright green and eye-catching in the summer, but the weather ruins it. The red, yellow, and orange leaves are largely unique to fall. There’s something so comforting about the views paired with the sound of leaves crunching underneath your shoes.
Meanwhile, in winter, there are dead trees everywhere. I know many people love snow, and so do I, but, unfortunately, it almost never snows significantly around Baltimore anymore.
Imagine being inside the school building all day, and you can finally leave, but once you get home it’s already dark. Does that sound nice? I doubt most people would say yes; even though I tend to enjoy colder weather, I would like to see the sun for more than ten minutes each day.
As for summer, I will never understand people who prefer painfully hot weather. If you’re outside, and it’s too cold, you can wear more layers, but if it’s too hot, there’s nothing you can do unless you have a mini fan that hopefully, but rarely works very well.
Often, people say that summer is the best season because of the long break from school. However, in terms of the season itself and its qualities, rather than our schedule built around it, fall’s benefits outweigh those of summer. If our breaks between school took place during fall, then would summer still be your favorite season?
Even as a person who doesn’t spend much time outside, I believe that one of the best ways to enjoy fall is to spend time in nature almost anywhere. You could follow a hiking trail on Sugarloaf Mountain, which is an hour away from Baltimore, or you could simply take a short walk near your home.
Fall may not be everyone’s favorite season, but I believe it’s the perfect medium of the seasons.
